Flat Tops Wilderness : Colorado's second largest wilderness area features a great expanse of rolling subalpine meadows and alpine tundra. Approximately 110 trout-laden lakes and ponds dot the country below a sweeping horizon of flat-topped cliffs. A ghost forest clings to slopes below the tundra, the result of a budworm epidemic that swept across the area in the 1940s, killing spruce and fir trees and leaving in its wake a skeleton forest of silver-gray snags. A more recent forest fire magnifies the haunted atmosphere and provides a glimpse of what Colorado's northern beetle-kill pine forests will look like after a good lightning bolt grabs hold.

Rocky Mountain National Park : I miss living so near RMNP that I could hike every morning and evening before and after work. I don't make enough trips to the Park now, and this year's journeys are marred by rust-colored forests as pine beetles inflict the first stage of a landscape transformation I wish didn't have to happen, even though one day quaking aspen and brilliant fireweed will fill in all the gaps dead lodgepoles eventually will leave behind.
