Flat Tops Wilderness
Colorado's second largest wilderness area features a great expanse of rolling subalpine meadows and alpine tundra. Approximately 110 trout-laden lakes and ponds dot the country below a sweeping horizon of flat-topped cliffs. A ghost forest clings to slopes below the tundra, the result of a budworm epidemic that swept across the area in the 1940s, killing spruce and fir trees and leaving in its wake a skeleton forest of silver-gray snags. A more recent forest fire magnifies the haunted atmosphere and provides a glimpse of what Colorado's northern beetle-kill pine forests will look like after a good lightning bolt grabs hold.Read More
